Study of CO Oxidation over Ru ( 0001 ) at High Gas Pressures
نویسنده
چکیده
Experiments performed at high gas partial pressures have demonstrated that the kinetics of the CO oxidation reaction at Ru (0001) is different and somewhat anomalous compared to that over other transition metal surfaces and, in particular, the turnover rate is exceptionally high. In order to gain insight into the underlying reasons for this behavior, we performed density functional theory calculations using the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation functional. We find that the high rate is due to a weakly, but nevertheless well bound, (1 × 1) oxygen adsorbate layer which may form for high O 2 pressures but not under usual ultra high vacuum conditions. The calculations indicate that reaction to CO 2 occurs both via scattering of gas-phase CO molecules as well as by CO molecules weakly adsorbed at vacancies in the oxygen adlayer, where the latter mechanism dominates the rate.

The Nanostructuring of Atomically Flat Ru(0001) upon Oxidation and Reduction
The O/Ru(0001) system is widely studied due to its rich phase variety of various stoichiometry and atomic arrangements, including the formation of a RuO2/Ru(0001) oxide layer. Apart from homogeneous ruthenium surfaces in certain oxidation states, also strongly heterogeneous surfaces can exist due to oxidation state's variation at the nanoscale. We report on a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)...
متن کاملDensity-functional theory study of the catalytic oxidation of CO over transition metal surfaces
In recent years, due to improvements in calculation methods and increased computer power, it has become possible to perform first-principles investigations for ‘simple’ chemical reactions at surfaces. We have carried out such studies for the catalytic oxidation of CO at transition metal surfaces, in particular, at the ruthenium surface for which unusual behavior compared to other transition met...
متن کاملLow Temperature CO Oxidation on Ruthenium Oxide Thin Films at Near-Atmospheric Pressures
Ruthenium model catalysts in the form of thin ruthenium oxide films grown on Ru(0001) were studied in the CO oxidation reaction at near-atmospheric pressures. The surfaces were prepared under vacuum conditions prior to the reactivity measurements carried out in a circulating flow reactor using gas chromatography. The films possessing oxygen in amounts equivalent to 1–4 monolayers (MLE) on Ru(00...
متن کاملCO oxidation over Ru(0001) at near-atmospheric pressures: From chemisorbed oxygen to RuO2
RuO2(110) was formed on Ru(0001) under oxygen-rich reaction conditions at 550 K and high pressures. This phase was also synthesized using pure O2 and high reaction temperatures. Subsequently the RuO2 was subjected to CO oxidation reaction at stoichiometric and net reducing conditions at near-atmospheric pressures. Both in situ polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy ...
متن کاملReply to comment on ‘‘CO oxidation on ruthenium: The nature of the active catalytic surface’’ by H. Over,
The premise of our Letter [1] was to state emphatically that under the conditions of the early studies of Peden and Goodman (PG) [2] RuO2 cannot be formed as the main active phase on Ru(0001) as proved by recent SXRD studies [3], and that a monolayer oxygen-covered Ru(0001) surface is the active phase for CO oxidation in the early PG studies. This monolayer oxygen-covered surface has recently b...
